NATHAN JOHNSTONE – BJJ & MMA COACH
Nathan has been immersed in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu from a young age and has spent almost two decades developing his skills as both a competitor and coach.
His early Jiu-Jitsu development was influenced by Brazilian BJJ legend Fernando “Tererê” Augusto, before continuing his development under Trevor Chamberlain and the Carlson Gracie Team. This background has helped shape Nathan into a highly technical and dynamic grappler with a wealth of experience to pass on to the next generation.
Nathan has achieved an impressive competitive record, including 6 x BJJ British Open Champion, 6 x NAGA Elite Class Champion, NAGA European Champion, and more than 50 regional competition gold medals accumulated throughout his competitive career.
His experience extends beyond traditional BJJ. Nathan moved into MMA competition at just 16 years old, building an impressive amateur record and becoming Cage Warriors Amateur Flyweight Champion. He has also competed successfully on Polaris, one of Europe’s leading professional grappling events, including a submission victory at Polaris 26.
Alongside competing, Nathan has developed extensive coaching experience. He teaches Gi and NoGi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, grappling and MMA, working with everyone from complete beginners to experienced competitors.
Nathan has a particular passion for coaching children and young people. Having started BJJ as a youngster himself, he understands how martial arts can help develop confidence, discipline, resilience and self-belief, while making sure training remains enjoyable and engaging.
He has also been involved in teaching Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu within the Royal Marines and Royal Navy, bringing his technical knowledge and practical approach to a wide range of students.
At Odyssey Combat Hub, Nathan plays a major role in developing both our junior and adult BJJ programmes, passing on the knowledge and experience gained from a lifetime on the mats.
